Chapter 15

Northern Lands, Thule

Hroarr seethed with fury as he concentrated his power into the dark poison, burning back the whirling tendrils that snaked through the mountain from his brother’s prison. The heightened power flowing in his blood was making the task faster, but the bond that had created it was wreaking havoc on him. The connection to his healer was a damned menace.

He felt her constantly and it wasn’t only her need, but her upset and anger.

This bond was nothing like the one he had with his þrír. Those had always been faint drifts of emotion, easily distinguishable and disregarded as his priestesses.

What came from the healer slammed through him with no warning and demanded his attention before cutting off only to do it again. And the need to have her constantly was relentless.

She’d made him crave her.

As it was, he’d been away from the palace for mere hours and his shaft throbbed against his leathers, demanding he go to her. A muscle ticked in his jaw as he sent his flames deeper, battling back the poison of his brother’s power as quickly as he could.

If he hadn’t stepped through the portal only to deal with incessant questions about her from his brother and Kara, he would have already called his female to him. Upon learning Kara and Dagur had gone to the Northern Lands to assist, he’d been pleased that they had acted with thought, yet neither had brought their þrír with them, so Hroarr had been delayed the time it had taken to collect the females and portal them in himself.

Regin and the others would have been finished with the task without assistance had he already destroyed the core issue. Had he known it would flare to such a menacing degree over the weeks, he would have sent Dagur in his place far sooner.

It was a misjudgment that he would not make again now with his new ability to sense the growing pestilence from a distance. It was an added benefit of the bond with his female, but it had come at a price.

Need.

Obsession.

When he finally found the end of the tendrils, he sent one last surge of flames to sear the core, feeling the malevolent rage burst free before being contained once again.

Dagur strode in and Hroarr turned to face him and he demanded, “Did the clans cease their fighting?”

Regin had rushed in nearly a half hour ago, informing them that dozens of infected mortals who had been hiding away in the mountains had come back, intent on ending their feud with blood. She’d said the rage of the toxins had quickly seeped back into the village before the palace warriors could deal with the riders. He’d immediately sent Kara and Dagur out to put an end to the battle while he took care of the poison that had caused the mortals’ feuding in the first place.

His brother nodded, but his muscles were tense, his fingers fisting at his sides. “Kara and I were able to cage the affected clansmen before any losses, but there were injuries on both sides.
